How to Design a Logo That Works on a Sign — A Chicago Business Owner's Guide

One of the most common sign problems we see at Magic Sign Design is a logo that looks great on a business card or website but doesn't translate to a storefront sign. A sign-ready logo follows specific principles. Here's what to consider before you invest in fabrication.

Why Sign-Ready Logos Are Different

A business card logo is viewed at 12 inches. A website logo is on a backlit screen. A channel letter sign is read at 30–100 feet from a moving car or a busy sidewalk. The principles that make a logo work at small scale are very different from what makes it work on a building facade.

The Readability Test — Can It Be Read in 2 Seconds?

A driver approaching your location on a busy Chicago street has roughly 2 seconds to read your sign before they're past it. Your sign's job in those 2 seconds is to communicate your business name and ideally your category (restaurant, salon, pharmacy). If your logo requires more than 2 seconds to parse, it's not working at street scale.

The most common failure: Script fonts that look beautiful at 72pt on a computer screen become completely unreadable at 24 inches of channel letter height viewed from 50 feet. Test your logo at actual sign scale before you fabricate.

Font Considerations for Signs

  • Bold and clean beats delicate and complex — thin serif fonts lose detail at sign scale; thick sans-serif fonts maintain legibility
  • Script fonts require extra height — if you love script, letters need to be significantly taller (30%+ more height) to maintain readability
  • All-caps vs mixed case — all-caps is slightly more readable at distance; mixed case is slightly more friendly; either can work with the right font
  • Custom vs. standard fonts — custom fonts are fine for signs as long as the sign company receives proper files (vector format, outlined text)

Color Principles for Signs

  • Contrast is everything — light text on dark background (or reverse) provides maximum readability. Light on light or dark on dark fails at distance.
  • 4+ colors get expensive fast — channel letters are typically one or two colors per set. Complex multicolor logos are better suited to lightbox signs with printed faces.
  • Consider your building — your sign color scheme needs contrast against your building facade color, not just contrast within the logo itself.

What Files Your Sign Company Needs

Before starting fabrication, provide your sign company with:

  • Vector files (.ai, .eps, .svg) — not raster images (.jpg, .png). Vector files scale without losing quality.
  • Outlined text — fonts converted to outlines so they don't require the sign company to have your specific font installed
  • Color specifications — Pantone (PMS) colors if you have a formal brand standard, or RGB/CMYK values

Don't have vector files? Magic Sign Design has an in-house design team that can redraw your logo in vector format optimized for sign fabrication. Contact us or call (224) 830-1576.
